The need for SD-WAN for success in the IoT (Internet of Things)

Connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of our lifes. Of course, many people are aware of this. Everything will be connected through millions of connected sensors and smart devices in our homes, offices and cities. That is why it is called the internet of things. The IoT developments are one of the biggest breakthroughs in history of the tech industry.

But why are IoT and WAN linked to each other?

Current architectures can’t provide the scalability or the flexibility required of IoT workloads. And if it’s possible, the costs are too high. This is where SD-WAN can provide the solution. Common problems include

For each of these problems, please follow the trouble shooting steps below.

Embedded 4G LTE/3G modem says “No Device Detected”

  1. On the web admin page, drag the 4G LTE/3G interface to “Disable”, wait a minute before putting it back on “Priority”.
  2. Upgrade the embedded 4G LTE/3G module firmware on the hidden support web admin page. The hidden support web admin page can be assessed on http://<Your Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX IP address>/cgi-bin/MANGA/support.cgi  after logged in on the web admin page. Check for module firmware update under “Cellular module firmware update” and follow the instructions accordingly.
  3. Factory reset the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX using either the hardware reset button or the software reset button on the web admin page under “System” > “Configuration”. Refer to the user manual for locating the hardware reset button.

If none of the above helps, please request for support with the results from the steps above.

Embedded 4G LTE/3G modem says ” No SIM Card Detected” despite SIM card is properly inserted

  1. Inspect the SIM card to make sure it is properly inserted. Refer to the user manual for proper SIM card insertion steps.
  2. Re-enter the APN settings as well as the SIM PIN manually to make sure there is no typo or corrupted character.
  3. Insert the SIM card to another embedded 4G LTE/3G modem of your Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX, of if your Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX features only one embedded 4G LTE/3G modem, insert the SIM card to another SIM slot if available.
  4. Insert the SIM card to a smartphone, USB 4G LTE/3G or a router of another make with embedded 4G LTE/3G modem and see if the SIM card is detected and usable. If the SIM card is not detected also, it is likely that the SIM card is corrupted. Please contact your mobile internet provider for a replacement SIM card.
  5. Find a SIM card that is currently working in a smartphone, USB 4G LTE/3G or a router of another make with embedded 4G LTE/3G modem and insert this SIM card to the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX. Be sure to the APN settings as well as the SIM PIN if needed to see if this SIM card is detected by the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX. If this SIM card is detected and functional with the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX while the other SIM card isn’t, it is likely that the other SIM card is corrupted. Please contact your mobile internet provider for a replacement SIM card.
  6. On the web admin page, drag the 4G LTE/3G interface to “Disable”, wait a minute before putting it back on “Priority”.

If the SIM card does not obtain IP address also, it is likely that the SIM card is corrupted. Please contact your mobile internet provider for a replacement SIM card.
  4. Find a SIM card that is currently working in a smartphone, USB 4G LTE/3G or a router of another make with embedded 4G LTE/3G modem and insert this SIM card to the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX. Be sure to the APN settings as well as the SIM PIN if needed to see if this SIM card is detected by the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX. If this SIM card obtains an IP address with the Peplink Balance/Pepwave MAX while the other SIM card isn’t, it is likely that the other SIM card is corrupted. Please contact your mobile internet provider for a replacement SIM card.

Better communication between public safety organizations

Communication connection failure

The C2000 emergency services communication system broke-down after the 2009 crash of Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 at Schiphol. The failure was repeated in 2016 during the attacks in Brussels. The present communication system still cannot handle the load of a disaster. Both incidents created an overload of the system, preventing messages from reaching everyone involved. For the security of all citizens, an adequate and robust communication system should be a priority.

New communications capabilities

The government is currently working to improve the existing C2000 network. However, there is no discussion of innovative ways for various security services to communicate. Any new system should enable video and photo sharing for better, immediate situational assessment and appropriate response. This level of communication requires a robust connection to control rooms, command centers and related hotlines. The C2000 network is not sufficient and these more data intensive communications should be diverted to other technologies. These technologies would not replace the existing network C2000, but would be a supplement to it.
